We interrupt this entry for a quick message… Check this shit out… the RNC at work. Now, back to our regularly scheduled blogging.
How to Submit a Short Story Collection
A MacEwan Primer
With any submission, one must include a discussion of the themes of one’s work. It is of paramount importance to wander, as far as humanly possible, from the traditional themes taught in high school literature classes. [man v man, man v nature, man v god, and so on]
The intent is for the author to emulate analysis of modern art. An example would be the catalog description of a 36 sq. inch canvas with a 2 inch crimson diagonal slash across a navy blue background as being symbolic of the clear cutting practices of Georgia Pacific [ie: raping] of America’s virgin forests in the south central US and the effect of the indigenous peoples of that region.
Here are some of my own themes:
1. The inconsistent illiterate howling of the disenfranchised masses represent a rigid continuity of purpose throughout MacEwan’s stories.
2. Although a detailed representational analysis of forethought and motive would prove disingenuous, MacEwan grapples with the juxtaposition of the congruous by creating an ever-expanding metaphor of righteous indignation coupled with the many faceted illusions of grace versus shallow effort.
3. By empowering yard animals with the power of speech, MacEwan denies suffrage to woodland creatures, signifying animals inhumanity to animals as beasts begin to walk upright in an effort to control the human population. Her consistent attention to metaphysical details the thematic content within the substructure of architectural sameness.
More to come…
