Emails abound as folks ask why I’m not blogging Katrina. Since it’s not headed here to Eastern NC, I didn’t think it necessary. But, apparently, I have a tradition to uphold, since I was ONE OF THE FIRST to ever blog a hurricane, back during Isabel. [see Poynter Online quote below]

Well, if I was a member of the Christian Coalition, a follower of Pat Robertson, here’s what I’d be saying about this Storm:
God is angry with us because there are casinos in Gulfport, right there on His gulf, floating in His beautiful water. How can anyone turn their back on such sin? Besides the casino barges, there are too many Vietnamese people selling vegetables near Gulfport. They are heathens. He wants the Native Americans to have all the casinos, but first they have to give up peyote and accept Jesus. Gay people live in New Orleans, so He will destroy the city. In Biloxi, well… obviously there are many sinners. Why else would God allow it to be destroyed? Biloxi and Gulfport — the Sodom and Gommorah of the Gulf Coast. Godless Heathens, all of them. God doesn’t destroy cities unless there’s nothing but bad in them. And remember: don’t look back or you’ll be turned into a pillar of salt. If you will send money, God will heal the Gulf Coast and you will receive thousands of dollars in return for your kindness. If you want a new car, God will give you one. That’s how it works. If only we’d killed that Venetian-zoo-alien dictatorial guy, then God would be happy with the United States and everything would have been just fine. God hates communism. Jesus cries when he sees communist children.
But thank goodness, I’m just me…

Of course, it’s not just news organizations that are publishing citizen reporting. In these blog-happy days, people living in the hurricane zone are blogging their own experiences. The Isabel Blog, by book editor Valerie MacEwan, is a fine example, featuring short descriptions of what it’s like living as a hurricane approaches and then passes over, plus a collection of her digital photos.
(Hint to news organizations: Consider seeking out the best such first-person blogs and get permission to republish them. It’s easy enough to find Isabel blogs via the Daypop search engine.)
