The Restaurant Antoine
Found this card with my father’s things. He went to New Orleans in, I think, early 1942, on his way to OCS. Most of his letters from the WWII era involve food. If Daddy had something good to eat, he was just fine. Stationed at Newport News, VA, he was a Lt., had something to do with loading Liberty Ships. Mother worked as a civilian for Army personnel, interviewing and hiring civilians for the shipyards.
He trained in Ithaca NY and the letters to Mom would describe, in great detail, how well he was being fed at the boarding house they were staying in. I’ll have to dig out the letters… remember him through them.
And then there’s THIS.
Hi Valerie! Thanks for your kind words about Spillway Review on the Dead Mule website and for this little gem. Everyone I talk to in New Orleans is very concerned about the lack of support in Washington for Category 5 levees and coastal restoration. As you may know, Katrina alone did not cause all of the flooding in New Orleans; rather certain levees were improperly designed and constructed. The federal government (through the Army Corps of Engineers) was reponsible for the design of the levees and the supervision of their construction. In my neighborhood we only experienced Cat 1 or 2 conditions. Nevertheless, the levees near my home failed due to their faulty construction. Many people died as a result and the devastation to property is severe. Please take a look at this website belonging to the Gulf Restoration Network. They are asking folks to contact Congress and the White House via their website and communicate their support for adequate levees and coastal restoration in the Gulf region. Without this protection, people will be reluctant to rebuild their homes and businesses, and New Orleans will never be the same. Take a look at this and pass the information along if you feel it’s appropriate.
Thanks,
Elizabeth
P.S. We are working on a New Orleans collection relating to the hurricane, especially our longing to return to the city we knew. Would you like to write up a little paragraph about your lovely Antoine’s card and your father’s visit?
The THIS is really fun and addictive.
