Neil Gaiman “American Gods”

Posted by vmac under WordGames

I try to blog on things artistic or literary. Sometimes family steps in to provide fodder for my missives — like this morning when Jane called to tell me her funny. Boys Emmett and Ollie seated every so quietly in front of PBS & Clifford the Big Red Dog (if you don’t have toddlers, trust me, Clifford is mesmerizing). She is grabbing that oh-so-rare moment of domestic harmony with sleeping cats, happy dog, a cup of coffee and a newspaper… enjoying the peaceful tranquility achieved perhaps 2% of a full-time Mom’s day. Then a transformer blew. Exploded!

She said the boys shot straight up out of their chairs like popcorn. Straight back down. I can just see them from the back, little boys going BOOP! and returning to their seats.

Squirrels used to play a lethal game of transformer-chicken down the street from our house in Aiken. It must have been more fun the highwire-chicken they constantly play here on our street. I told Jane to tell Ollie that BOOM meant fried squirrel.

American GodsLiterary news:
I bought Mom a copy of American Gods for Christmas last year. It took her an inordinately long amount of time to read it. She can usually slam out a 500 page book in a week, even at age 91. Just last week she handed Gaiman’s book and told me Caroline should read it. Well, talk about throwing down a gauntlet. Caroline? Hell, no sireee, me first, me first! Let me tell you – this book is phenomenal. Gaiman’s genius astounds me once again. Wolves in the Walls! I’ve got to remember to get that book back from Phoebe Kate, I loaned it to her daughter over a year ago. It’s time to read that to Ollie.

I’ve plucked Bill Moyer’s book of his PBS interviews with Joseph Campbell “The Power of Myth” from the bottom of a dusty shelf in the upstairs library and I am loving studying it while working my way through American Gods. I wonder if that old PBS series is available on DVD? Hmmmmmmmm….. Moyers is an American god — an icon or shaman at least.

American Gods is out in trade paperback. Grab you a copy and prepare yourself. Think about your ancestors and the peoples who came here before them. The heritage & stories of the mythical gods they brought with them and then ponder the gods of today – like television, technology, and … sort of Odin meets Bill Gates.

What if they all got in a pissing contest?

*oh — ordered a copy of American Gods for Caroline and had it shipped out yesterday. I’m keeping this copy. Ya’ll have a good day. I’m seeding starter plants today, using tin cans instead of plastic containers. Outside niceness and then there’s the weeding of the front garden. Who’d a thought I’d be doing that before April Fool’s Day?

Ought to be interesting…
