Jon Krakauer, of Into Thin Air fame, wrote a very insightful book about the FLDS cult. In Under the Banner of Heaven, he takes you inside this renegade group of excommunicated Mormons who believe themselves to be above the law in matters from polygamy to child abuse to sexual exploitation to murder. I reviewed it in PopMatters and the book is an essential for anyone who wants to understand the power this cult holds over its members, male and female, and why the state of Texas just might be justified in removing children from their families.
