got an email from HP about the scanner driver. got it within 48 hours. so for all you HP naysayers, you probably just weren’t as polite in your request as we southern women know how to be. Ya’ll…

here’s a copy of the instructions:
Dear Val,

Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.

The CD that came with the Photosmart C4180 has the scanning software on
it.
I am sending you steps to do a manual uninstall. Please make sure the
USB is disconnected from the computer before you start the manual
uninstall. I am also sending you a link to download the latest drivers.
This installer does not include some third-party software products, such
as the OCR program, that are on the installation CD.

Double-click the Macintosh hard drive (labeled Macintosh HD by default).

Open the Applications folder.

Open the Utilities folder.

Double-click Activity Monitor. The Activity Monitor window should open.
If the window does not open:

When Activity Monitor opens, look for the following processes:

NOTE: Not all of these processes may be running.
HP Communications
HP Director
HP Image Zone
HP Trap Monitor
pipedaemon.
HPIO Classic Proxy
HPIO Classic Proxy 2
Hpdot3d
HP AiO Notifications.app
Print daemon

Highlight them one at a time and click the Quit Process icon above.

Click Force Quit to quit the process.

After you quit all of the above items found, close Activity Monitor.

Go back to the Applications folder.
Drag the HP AiO Software or the Hewlett-Packard folder to the Trash.

NOTE: Some of the files described in the following steps may not be
found.

Go back to the Macintosh hard drive.

Open the Library folder.

Open the Application Support folder.

Drag the hp folder into the trash.

Return to the Library folder.

Open the Caches folder.

Drag the following files to the trash:

any files beginning with HP or hp
any files beginning with Hewlett-Packard
any files beginning with com.hp

Go back to the Library folder.

Open the Documentation folder.

Open the Help folder.

Drag the HP Photo and Imaging Help folder into the trash.

Go back to the Library folder.

Open the Frameworks folder.

Drag the HPServicesInterface.framework into the trash.

Return to the Library Folder.

Open the Image Capture Folder.

Open the TWAIN Data Sources folder.

Drag the HP All-in-One Scan.ds file into the trash.

Return to the Image Capture folder.

Open the Scripts folder.

Drag the Import and View with IPhoto file into the trash.

Drag the View with HP file into the trash.

Go back to the Library folder.

Open the Preferences folder.

Drag the Hewlett-Packard Preferences folder into the trash.

Drag the HP Registry file into the trash.

Trash any files that begin with com.hp.

Drag the file located at Macintosh
HD>Library>Preferences>loginwindow.plist to the desktop. Not removing
this file during the manual uninstallation can cause the uninstall to be
unsuccessful.

Return to the Library folder and then Printer folder.

Open the hp folder.

Drag the aio folder into the trash.

Drag the Frameworks folder into the trash.

Drag the hpio folder into the trash.

Drag pipedaemon into the trash.

Drag Print Daemon into the trash.

Drag the Utilities folder into the trash.

Go back to the Library Folder.

Open the StartupItems folder.

Drag the HP IO folder into the trash (it may not appear here).

Drag the HP Trap Monitor folder into the trash (it may not appear here).

Go back to the Macintosh hard drive.

Open the Users folder.

Double-click your username (this should have a symbol of a house next to
it).

Open the Library folder.

Open the Preferences folder.

Drag the following files into the trash:

any files beginning with com.apple.print
any files beginning with com.hp
any files beginning with Hewlett-Packard
any files beginning with HP or hp

Return to the Library folder.

Open the Printers folder.

Drag any All-in-One printers listed here into the trash.

Drag the HP Director or HP Image Zone icon from the Dock and drop it on
an empty space on the desktop. The icon will disappear.

Close all open windows

Restart the computer. When the computer is up and running, please empty
the trash.

Double-click the Macintosh HD. (by default called Macintosh
HD).Double-click the Applications folder.

Double-click the Utilities folder.

Double-click the Disk Utility.

Upon the left side, select the Macintosh HD. (It will be indented and
usually is the second entry in that list)

On the right side beneath the white box single click on Verify Disk
Permission. When that is completed, single click on Repair Disk
Permissions. When that is completed, return to a normal desktop.

Please go to the link below and download the latest drivers for this
unit. You may have to copy and paste it into your web browser. Please go
to Step 3 and select Download Only. Once the download is complete,
close down the internet and all other applications. You should have an
icon for the installer on your desktop. Double-click on the icon and
follow the prompts. Make sure the printer is connected directly to the
computer and turned on before the installation starts.
