working on the Samara photo albums

Posted by vmac under Creative Non-Fiction

I’m turning way too geeky but truly — not quite geeky enough — with JetPhoto Studio. Here’s a sample of the howler monkeys who were in the forest right next to Las Palmeras — in Samara. I don’t have the Google maps part down quite right, though…

If you click here on another of my attempts at publishing an album of Samara howler monkey photos, you can then click on the “map” under the photo. Then click on the orange doomaflaugie and try to get Google Earth to load the photos in the correct geographic position. But, der duh duh, you must have Google Earth on your computer for it to work… if it does work.

Links to jetphoto studio, google earth, etc should be here but I’m too damn tired to find them… sorry ya’ll.

Granted, I’ve only driven from Liberia to Samara, but the beauty of the drive is unparalleled. It’s a “get out your thesaurus, Leroy” day when grasping for adjectives. Phenomenal comes to mind.

And our hotel in Liberia? The El Punto Hotel — and there’s a great story in that which I’ll tell soon… I promise. Some great photos of the hotel and the town of Liberia on Rob’s computer — gotta’ grab ‘em tomorrow.

This, to me, is the real Costa Rica. Samara, Costa Rica! Hey Craig, check out the address: Las Palmeras. Across from the horse field, down the road from the bridge, near the bus stop, where the howler monkeys climb on electric poles, on the road to Nosara, Samara, GTE, Costa Rica. (Did I leave anything out?)

Sometimes photography says it better than words. Sometimes? Well… most of the time, to be truthful.

Ned, Samara’s punk horse…

Posted by vmac under Today's Feature

Costa Rican Surfer HorsedudesSome foals are just born bad. Like Ned– he’s a trouble maker. He roams the beach in search of innocent surfer dude horsepals and convinces them to party with him. All the horseparents warn their foals about the Evils of Ned. Unfortunately, Vinnie didn’t listen and his mom is gonna’ kick his ass for hanging out at Shake Joe’s in Samara with Ned.

Ollie rides the escavator!C4 called last night to tell me not to worry about the storm. Hell, who knew there was a tropical storm bouncing into the Costa Rican coast? Now it’s heading toward Nicaragua. Alma. I’ve always loved that name. Alma, Arkansas — a great place to drive through on your way to somewhere else.

It’s not as if our local WITN hands out Central American weather forecasts. The electricity went out as we spoke on the phone but C4 and Jamie are Carolina kids, tropical storms, lots of rain, and high winds tend to be more interesting than frightening. Yes, we’ve been flooded here, I’m not making light of such events. I just mean we don’t panic when storms are predicted. We know how to pack our Get The Hell Out Of Here Now suitcases in advance.

C4 in Samara

Posted by vmac under Creative Non-Fiction

C4 posted her first entry on her Summer in Samara (Costa Rica) blog. She and Jamie are becoming acclimated to the heat. Apparently they stink like the Survivor cast. Nice. That won’t bother Rob a bit, he barely has any sense of smell. Or is that all men — who don’t smell BO? ahhhhh.

It appears her sense of humor has returned… read more

This morning I woke up and there was a crab (a pretty big one) in the kitchen sink – how the f&*% did he get there? Don’t know, but he was a feisty little sucker! Our neighbor Mara helped me get him out. I could have done it myself ;) , but I was waiting for Jamie to get up and see it first.

Here’s something really funny — if you Google

Britney Spears “Samara, Costa Rica”

you get Rob’s blog 2nd on the list. At least you did last night…

One thing we’ve learned over the last couple of months — Playa Samara, Costa Rica? You have to REALLY WANT to get there. To catch a flight on a puddle jumper from the airport in San Jose, you get one shot this time of year (wet season) and that’s at 8:30 in the morning. You basically have to stay overnight and then catch the flight. (a rhyme, how nice). Turns out, we’re having a dear family member fly in for a four day whirlwind Costa Rica vacation. And she can’t get from San Jose to Samara during that whirl. So we’re going to find something swell in between us and San Jose, hopefully so we can get to visit with the visitors.

Well, I hope this is a good place to recommend to them. It’s about 20 minutes from San Jose and looks wonderful. The Visa del Valle Inn and it’s spiffy.
